Primitive Bowdrill Fire

In this immersive workshop, students will explore the foundational principles of firecraft and gain a deep understanding of the essential components of primitive fire-making. Each participant will carve their own bowdrill kit and receive step-by-step, hands-on guidance to successfully produce fire using traditional methods. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to continue practicing and mastering the bowdrill technique at home.

Build-Your-Own Birdhouse

This hands-on workshop is designed just for kids who want to learn the basics of tool safety and simple construction. In a time when many schools have phased out woodshop, Cedarwood Outdoor School brings it back—promoting woodworking as a valuable life skill. In this class, students will measure, cut, assemble, and decorate their very own birdhouse, which they can proudly hang in their yard to welcome local birds. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to learn, build, and have fun!

Introduction to Land Navigation

This course covers everything from establishing pace count to map reading (topography, symbols, grid coordinates, etc.) to basic compass use (shooting an azimuth, calculating declination, etc.). Once that foundation is achieved, students will participate in several pre-set navigation courses to test their knowledge under the guidance of COS instructors.

DIY Paracord Bracelets

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn practical knot-tying skills while crafting their own durable paracord survival bracelet. Along the way, they’ll discover the real-world uses of paracord in outdoor and emergency situations and practice techniques for measuring, weaving, and finishing. By the end of the class, each participant will leave with a custom bracelet they built themselves—ready for the trail or the field.
