Workshop Details
Fire has always been one of the most essential wilderness skills. Long before modern tools existed, people learned to produce fire using simple materials gathered from the landscape. Among primitive fire-making methods, the bowdrill remains one of the most reliable and effective techniques, especially in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.
In this immersive workshop, students will explore the foundational principles of firecraft and learn how friction can be used to create an ember from natural materials. Each participant will carve their own bowdrill kit and receive step-by-step, hands-on instruction in assembling, preparing, and using the set. Along the way, we will discuss wood selection, proper technique, and the subtle factors that determine success or failure when working with friction fire.
By the end of the workshop, students will not only understand the mechanics behind the bowdrill but will also have the opportunity to produce fire themselves. Participants will leave with their own handcrafted kit, along with the knowledge and confidence needed to continue practicing and refining this timeless wilderness skill.
