Workshop Details

Every animal that moves across the landscape leaves behind clues. Tracks in the soil, marks on trees, disturbed leaves, and subtle patterns in the ground all tell a story about the wildlife that shares our environment. Learning to read these signs opens a new dimension of awareness in the outdoors.

In this immersive workshop, students will dive deeply into the fundamentals of wildlife tracking while becoming familiar with many of the animals that inhabit our local landscape. Participants will learn how to recognize the tracks of common species and understand the key features that distinguish them, including track morphology, gait patterns, and more.

Throughout the day, students will examine tracks and learn how trackers interpret the subtle clues left behind by wildlife. Participants will also learn how to make plaster casts of animal tracks, allowing them to preserve and study these signs long after they leave the field.

In addition to classroom-style instruction, the workshop will include short scouting walks to search for track and sign in the surrounding landscape. These field experiences help students apply what they are learning while sharpening their observation skills and developing a deeper awareness of the wildlife around them.

By the end of the workshop, students will have a strong foundation in the art and science of wildlife tracking and a new way of seeing the landscape through the signs animals leave behind.
